First Try on the Trainers

So this afternoon and yesterday I got on my bike (on the trainers) with the full intent of getting a work out in. Both days I only managed to do 10 minutes. M and I had the full intention of going to the gym this evening, but he’s feeling like he’s about to be sick (we were around his aunt and dad today and yesterday who both have colds), so we skipped the gym. I decided this meant I had to get on the bike for a real workout tonight. I set a goal of thirty minutes.

I did it! I was a sweaty mess after:

sweaty

I forgot to mention that because I’m a spoiled brat gadget obsessed person. I also bought a bike computer yesterday. I have a Garmin, but the problem with a Garmin is that it does speed/distance by … GPS obviously. So I bought one that uses your tire circumference. In addition to speed and distance it gives you your cadence and can connect to a heart rate monitor. I’m going to try to see if one of the two (er, I actually have three but one of them has never worked) I have laying around will work with it. If they don’t, I won’t be buying one that does. I can use the Garmin on an indoor setting to get my heart rate if I really want. Or I can use the polar heart rate monitor I have. Geez. I have a lot of gadgets.

The moral of the computer story was that I did 7.4 miles in 30 minutes. That’s 14.8 mph. Much slower than I am used to but as I said yesterday I am feeling really out of bike shape. I think it’ll also be a bit of an adjustment to get used to the trainers. Despite the television (we were watching the pregame show for MNF tonight, which might explain the next part of the sentence), it was quite boring. I am used to the road and scenery. Not moving is not nearly as fun, but I think it’ll be great to stay in shape during the post-season.

On a side note, I’m happy to report that I have a bag packed to hit up the gym in the morning. I haven’t been in the morning in approximately forever, and, from my experience, morning workouts help me lose weight. I don’t know if it’s the effect they have on my eating later in the day. Or the fact that I also sometimes do two-a-days when I workout in the morning. Or maybe the consistency? Who knows, but I want to and need to lose some more weight so I’m going to start doing it in the morning. With daylight savings time, this is the perfect time to get up “early” and do a morning work out.

  • I am a gadget obsessed person too, almost to a fault. Sometimes I just have to put down the gadget and walk away. :-) When I see a new gadget, I am like a bird that sees something shiny in the bushes. I have to go check it out.
